Experience a unique vintage product that, in its time, was designed to alleviate minor headache tension, aches, and pains . We reproduced this lovely Headache Cologne from 1926, so you too can experience history.

This is a fascinating piece of history that has been forgotten. We couldn’t let that happen, so here it is, brought back from the vaults of forgotten history… Take a look at the photos. I promise you, it’s a legit thing, and the most remarkable aspect of this product is that we were able to use the actual label from the 1920s.

Headache Cologne was prevalent in its time, so it had several different labels from the pharmacies and apothecaries that made it. But we were excited to find the matching label for our 1926-dated recipe.  We put a reducer in instead of a spray cap. Put some on your hands and then rub it onto the place that needs it, versus spraying around the eyes. This has Menthol, so the area will heat up and cool down a little.

What is Headache Water?

History

In the 1926 formulary, we found this recipe and some history: "Cologne Water for several hundred years has justly occupied an important place amongst perfumes. It had its origin in the city of Cologne, Germany, and has been prepared by the same firms for a long period….A special form of cologne water in which menthol is dissolved has been largely sold under the name of “Headache Cologne.” These products are delightfully refreshing and possess genuine therapeutic value. The plain cologne waters are especially acceptable when used in a sick-room.  The headache cologne, when applied to the forehead, is both refreshing and stimulating.”

It’s interesting to me. I love seeing how history repeats itself. Eau de Cologne was originally a medicine advertised as a miracle cure. Eau de cologne began in the late 17th century. Then it was passed on to Jean Antoine Farina, who settled in Cologne in 1709… see where this is going?  I should point out that most waters, vinegars, and colognes were considered medicinal before they were solely worn for scent. The idea of perfumes for scent became more en vogue by the 19th century. But, then, in 1853, Eau de Cologne Impériale by Guerlain was said to be created for the Empress Eugénie of France to help alleviate her headaches and migraines, so again, it trickles back to the "medicine" as was its original use…What I find interesting is that I haven’t found references for  Headache Cologne pre-20th century. Maybe it will take more digging, so far, all the recipes start in 1900 and as late as 1946.

So what does it smell like?
Like the original Eau de Cologne, it smells like various citrus oils with Mint. And the smell is very different from the feel. Because once it’s on the skin, you will probably smell and feel the menthol first.
