While the recipe comes from writings from a midwife's diary in the 18th and early 19th centuries, the herbs used were highly written about even back then. This recipe started as an original tea recipe for the tummy, but with further research into the herbs used, we realized that it could be used for more than the things mentioned on the label.
We took an old recipe and updated it,
To Use: Warm a little in your hand and massage well. Use as needed. + it smells really good!!
Note: This has unrefined organic shea butter in it, which means you will get fat blooms on top. So don't worry—that is an entirely natural process!! Check out our Shea butter to learn more. It's the same one we use in this recipe!
Ingredients:
Organic Beeswax, Olive Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Calendula, Organic Ginger, Organic Chamomile, Frankincense, Organic Geranium EO, Organic Rose Oil, Organic Lavender Oil, Organic Marjoram Oil.
Label: We updated this label. So, what you now see is our new label for this wonderful, helpful balm. This replaces the old one with the Regency woman on it. But we couldn't resist this original label from our collections. I think it is an early to mid-Victorian label. I don't know why the hand was on there or what they were selling. It could have been powder or hand cream of some sort, but I thought it fit with the theme of helping sore and strained parts, including hands and fingers, as we get older. Also, I took an 18th-century engraving of a caduceus, also known as the rod of Asclepius, which was and still is used in the apothecary and the medicinal world field as a symbol for "helping people fix issues and heal them!"
OUTLANDER Variation:
We Think Claire would approve of this recipe! "Deep Tissue Balm"
If someone had let her peruse their family book of recipes, she would have seen a recipe for tea and known how to make it into a balm just like we did!!
When we were asked to come up with products that would or could have been used in the time period of the popular novel and movie Outlander, we wanted to give you something unique and authentic to history and something that could have been made in that region because the recipe already exists. We give you our "Outlander Inspired Apothecary Collection" Like Claire, we noticed that the herbs used in this original recipe are also really great for helping to soothe and heal deep tissues when applied topically. We think she would have used this as a base recipe and added to it. You can still apply it to your tummy for cramps. Historically, women had monthly abdomen and lower back issues with sore muscles as well. This salve is designed to give comfort and relieve pain associated with aching muscles, tissues, cramps, and all monthly ailments. But we think Claire would have realized the medicinal value not just for women's complaints but the complaints from men as well with sore muscle and back pain. This balm works well when it is massaged :) into aching muscles and backs for relief of pain and loosening the muscles. Let it soak in and allow it to relieve your tension and pain. This salve will help heal and ease pain with anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and relaxing properties. Great for those on the go, too!
